Since I can remember, baking Christmas cookies has always been one of my favorite Christmas season activities. When I was younger, my mom and I used to spend days in the kitchen making all kinds of Christmas cookies to give as gifts to friends and family. As I got older, I kept this tradition alive and would make the same recipes with my sisters. Now that I live in Los Angeles, I can’t always make it home for Christmas, so I have started a new tradition of baking cookies with my girlfriends. This year, I had the help of my friend Bianca, and we definitely had a blast baking while sipping on some mimosas and listening to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” on repeat. Obviously, there’s probably no better time to sport a tacky Christmas sweater than when you are doing such festive activities. This particular sweater is great if you live somewhere cold because it’s definitely warm. I was personally a little too warm while cooking in this sweater, but hey, you suffer for fashion right? In the spirit of giving, this post not only contains outfit details, but also my favorite Christmas cookie recipe. Merry Christmas and happy baking!

CHRISTMAS SUGAR COOKIES
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 egg
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Sprinkles
2 12oz cans of Icing (vanilla or buttercream for best results)
Food coloring
Mix together the first five ingredients. After those are thoroughly combined, stir in the remaining ingredients except for the granulated sugar. In order for this dough to roll out properly, you will need to chill it for at least a couple of hours in the fridge. I usually make this dough the night before I intend on making these cookies. After the dough has had at least 3 hours in the fridge, you are ready to go! Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Next, grab a handful of dough and place on top of a well-floured surface. (The flour helps the dough to keep from sticking.) Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out about 3/16 inches thick, then grab your cookie cutters and cut into the dough. Place cookies on a greased baking sheet. If you want to go the easy route, you can put the sprinkles on the cookies and bake. However, if you want icing on your cookies, leave them as is and bake them for 7-8 minutes. After you take them out of the oven, put them on a cooling rack and allow them to get to room temperature. Next, I like to take the 2 cans of icing and divide them into four bowls, using the red, blue, green, and yellow food coloring in each one. Spread your desired amount of icing on each cookie, and top with sprinkles. I have found that letting the iced cookies sit out for a couple of hours allows the icing to set a little more so that if you need to stack the cookies on top of one another, they don’t get completely stuck together. Then, all you need to do is pour yourself a glass of milk and enjoy! 😉
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the cookies! xo
