One thing at the top of my bucket list of life is to go to the Kentucky Derby. How I never made it there while I was living in Tennessee, I will never know, but in any case, I dream of the day I can attend this quintessential event. I think my fascination with the Kentucky Derby (and dressing up for the race track in general) stems from my love of the movie My Fair Lady. This movie is one of my favorites and has been since I was pretty young. Of course, one of the best scenes in this film is when Professor Higgins takes Eliza Doolittle to the races to show off the fact that he shaped her into a perfect lady. While she definitely screws that up, her outfit is so on par and I have fantasized about the day when I myself could be so fabulous at the races. Well, I haven’t exactly made it to the Kentucky Derby yet, but I will be attending Derby Day LA, which is pretty much the next best thing! This event is the place to be this Saturday if you’re in LA: there will be coverage of the races, as well as an open bar (speakin’ my language), polo matches, a red carpet, art installations, live music, and best-dressed awards, so…keep your fingers crossed for me! If this sounds like your kinda Saturday, get yourself some tickets and join me! I’m really excited…can you tell?!
Ok, now on to the important matter of what to wear! Obviously, some sort of a statement headpiece is necessary. The standard go-to is the wide brim hat. In this case, the bigger and more over the top you can be, the better. I will admit, this hat does not live up to all of my Derby fantasies, but I added some flowers to it to give it more pizazz. Another great option is a fascinator. This gorgeous piece is fun because it has a little veil, so you can be super mysterious if that’s your vibe.
Now, for your dress. Honestly, any sundress is fair game for an outdoor race. You could also go with a fun cocktail dress if you’re feeling extra fancy. I opted for this number from Asos because it was just so fun and whimsical, I just couldn’t help myself. Also, I would classify this color as peach, and what could be more southern than peaches, am I right? I will note, I scored this at the 11th hour when they were nearly sold out, so hopefully, they’ve restocked since I bought it. Otherwise, I’ll try to find something as close as possible. I just loved how fun and feminine this dress was. It is a little more conservative, but I can be sure no one at the party will be in anything like this, and that is what I love!
