I am a complete sucker for award shows. Actually, in all honesty, I’m really a sucker for watching the red carpet arrivals of award shows and then not bothering to watch the actual show. Whoops. What can I say, I have different priorities than most? Anyway, Monday was my first day off in a week, so I relished my lazy afternoon in bed watching all these amazing looks walk down the red carpet. If you are like me, you’ve probably already read like 10 different best-and-worst-dressed-lists. (Especially since I’m publishing this a day late due to the fact that I thought this post got lost in cyberspace due to an ill-timed, accidental use of the delete key.) Well, for what its worth, here’s the best and worst of the 2014 Emmy’s, according to little ol’ me.
THE BEST DRESSED
Camila Alves in Zuhair Murad
In my opinion, Mrs. McConaughey stole the show out on the carpet last night. She was my absolute favorite look. As Guiliana Rancic said about Camila Alves, “That is not normal.” No, its not. She was absolutely STUNning.
Julia Roberts in Elie Saab
In a sea of floor length dresses, Julia stood out in this shorter, flirtier number. And those legs….I can only hope my legs look that good when I’m in my late 40’s!
Heidi Klum in Zac Posen
Heidi Klum+Zac Posen= perfection. Even though this is not a typical, super structured gown that is typical of Posen, I love its flowiness and the subtle structure in the top of the dress.
Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli
Williams may be the new Peter Pan, but she looked absolutely classic and feminine last night in this gown. The bright yellow around the waist keeps it modern and fun.
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier
The Masters of Sex star was the epitome of old Hollywood glam with a modern twist. The cut outs on the side with the white train were nice additions to an otherwise classic dress.
Hayden Panettiere in Octavio Carolin
Hayden shows us that even pregnant ladies can rock a daringly low cut, glam gown on the red carpet. She also announced she will be having a daughter. Congrats!
Kate Walsh in Stephane Rolland
Not everyone is a fan of this look, but I am obsessed with bright yellow, so it is hard for me to not love this. Also, red hair with yellow is next level as far as I’m concerned. On top of everything, I really like the structure of this dress and Kate’s minimal accessories and makeup that allow the dress to speak for itself.
Gwen Stefani in Versace
Gwen…where do I even begin? She just always looks amazing. To the top of her perfectly platinum blonde hair to the bottom of this Swarovski crystalized dress, this look is perfection.
Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
Octavia is a girl who knows that when you find something that works for you, you stick to it. She consistently looks amazing on the red carpet because she knows she looks killer in Tadashi Shoji. Work it, girl.
January Jones in Prabal Gurung Resort
This dress is stunning, and the higher hem in front allows just enough room to show off those amazing black pumps.
Laverne Cox in Marc Bouwer
Laverne definitely made a great first impression on her first ever Emmy’s red carpet. I love this look because it is so simple, but ethereal and elegant.
Sarah Hyland in Christian Siriano
Lord knows I love a good crop top and skirt combo. This is such a fresh and fun look for the red carpet. I recently got a skirt similar to this one (though not as long) and will definitely be copying this look sometime soon.
Sofia Vergara in Roberto Cavalli
News flash: Sofia Vergara showed up to an awards show looking smokin’ hot. I thought it was cute how she claimed she didn’t want boyfriend Joe Manganiello to accompany her to the Emmy’s because “he’s too hot.” Must be hard to be you, Sofia!
THE WORST
Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli
This was my least favorite look of the night. I actually think the skirt itself is pretty, I love the colors. However, her blouse does not seem like it fits her properly, and the skirt hits her in a really awkward part of her torso. This look does Lena no justice and is really unflattering.
Katherine Heigl in Vintage John Hayles
Ok. So I get that this is a really beautiful vintage gown, but why not save this for a red carpet event, say, when you are over the age of 60? Don’t be an old lady before your time, Katherine!
Mindy Kaling in Kenzo
I love Mindy Kaling, but I really hate this dress on her. Not only is it unflattering, but I just don’t get the two random stripes of silver on this dress.Ch
Kerry Washington in Prada
Normally I am completely in love with anything that Olivia Pope…er… Kerry Washington chooses to wear. She is usually the picture of polished perfection. This Prada number left me scratching my head. The bodice doesn’t seem to fit her right, and the little mini skirt under the dress just serves to shorten her legs.
Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta
Much like Kerry Washington, Zooey Deschanel is one actress whom I feel is usually one of my red carpet favs. Its not that I hate this pink dress so much, I just felt that the bottom was a little long maybe? It just looks a bit wrinkled and frumpy at the bottom. Also, I don’t know what is going on with her hair. Call me crazy, but I think my hair looked like this at my junior prom. Rather than looking modern, she looks a little bit too “pretty princess” here.
Christina Hendricks in Marchesa
Christina Hendricks is like the real life Jessica Rabbit, so you would think that this mermaid style red gown on her would be a knock out. Call me crazy, but I just think this looks frumpy. Ruching is really hard to pull off when you are curvy, and this dress has a LOT of ruching.
Natasha Leonne in Custom Opening Ceremony
NIkki is one of my favorite characters on Orange is the New Black, but this dress was probably one of my least favorites of the night. The heavy dark navy lace felt to wintery for an August red carpet, plus that tiny mermaid skirt makes Natasha look shorter than she is.
Dascha Polanco in …?
I honestly can’t find out where this dress is from, which makes me think that it is an off the rack prom dress, which from the looks of it would not be surprising. Besides the fact that this dress is pretty unmemorable, her boobs do not fit into the top. As in, they are falling over the sides of her dress. Not a cute look.
Well, that does it for my two cents on all the glam that went down at Nokia Theatre last Monday night. Hope you enjoyed my opinions. What do you think about my picks for best and worst? Let me know, I can handle it. 😛
