Alright, I have been WAITING to write this Joybird Couch review, but I wanted to wait until I had my couch for a long period of time before I really made my final decision on my Joybird Hughes Grand Sofa. If you’ve landed on this blog post in your research on whether or not Joybird is worth it, read on for my experience and final thoughts! Please be advised, this Joybird couch review is completely unsponsored. I paid for this couch with my own money, but heyyyyy Joybird, holla at ya girl because I need an accent chair, okayyy?!
Joybird Couch Review: How does Joybird Work?
Joybird is an online home furnishing company that offers furniture and home decor at fairly affordable prices. They specialize in the mid-century modern vibe. They strive to make sure that no one settles when it comes to their home decor and gives people all the options they need to make their space truly their own original style and vision, while providing high quality products that will last a lifetime.
“We believe in creating handcrafted furniture from the finest materials, at fair prices, customized by our customers to meet their exact needs. The result is a one-of-a-kind furniture buying experience you won’t find at a big box retailer.”
– Joybird
When I first came across Joybird, it all seemed pretty incredible. The prices were reasonable and as I am a huge fan of the mid century modern look, plus I loved all the color and fabric options they offer…seriously it feels endless. My husband and I really needed a new couch last year during the lockdowns. We’ve owned a series of hand-me-down couches so we decided the heck with it, if we are going to be stuck at home we might as well have a better couch, right? We definitely mulled over this purchase quite a bit, but one thing that really helped us was the fact that Joybird offers a free service in which they will ship you a box of swatches of all their fabrics so you can see what they really look and feel like in real life and make sure the colors your considering really mesh well with the room you’re decorating.
Joybird happened to be running a sale last year during Labor Day, (watch out for their sales, they’re a great time to snag a piece for much less $$) so once we finally agreed on the Hughes Grand Sofa in Merit Dove, I clicked add to cart and our Joybird adventure began.
One great thing about Joybird is they offer payment through Affirm, which really eased our purchase especially during a year of a lot of economic uncertainty. Make sure if you use Affirm, you make your payments on time and pay it off within the year so you avoid crazy interest and fees. I set mine up on automatic payments so I did not have to even worry about this ever happening.
When you purchase a piece of Joybird furniture, prepare to wait a bit for it to finally show up at your door. They make all their furniture to order. You should expect up to ten weeks of wait time before your purchase is delivered to you. One thing I loved was the fact that they updated us at each step of the way via email. I got an email letting me know when they constructed the frame, cut the fabric, etc…they really keep you in the loop!
If you want a much more in depth explanation of the ordering + shipping process at Joybird, check out my youtube video below. I go much more in depth with that, plus share my first impressions of the couch and their delivery service.
Joybird Couch Review + First Impressions:
Ok, now let’s talk about the pros and cons of Joybird….
Joybird Couch Review: The Cons
Bad news first, right? Ok, so the first thing that is a bit of a downer about ordering from Joybird is the fact that it does take so long to receive your items. I understand why, but sometimes you just want that fabulous new piece for your home like now, am I right?
Another con: their return policy is a little confusing. I talked about this a bit on my youtube video review, but back then I was maybe under the wrong impression about how it works. Basically, they claim in this video on their youtube channel that you have 365 days to try your Joybird purchase in your home. If you don’t like it, you can send it back. Nothing on their website currently suggests this, however I do remember seeing it a year ago when I purchased my Joybird couch. If it is no longer their policy, I don’t know why they’d leave that video up for people to find. According to their site, you have 14 days to return your item without fees. They also give a window of 90 days from the delivery to decide if you’d like to return an item, but this comes at a cost. The item must be in its original condition, and you are responsible for the shipping costs and will be refunded minus a 10% restocking fee.
So, buying a couch online at Joybird is not entirely risk free. I know it was definitely a little nerve wracking for me to make such a large purchase without having seen the couch in person or had the chance to sit on the model I was interested in before purchasing. Luckily, at a recent stay at an Acme House in Palm Springs, I got to test drive Joybird. The home we stayed in had a Joybird couch in their living room, but I know the vast majority of people shopping Joybird won’t have this opportunity. If you happen to live in NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, or Kansas City, you can pop into one of their showrooms to experience their furniture in person before you buy.
I also did a bit of research before buying my couch and came across some very negative reviews from other Joybird customers. Some people complained that their shipment just got lost and never delivered, others who ordered sectional styles claimed to not have gotten all the pieces, or if they did, sometimes the pieces did not fit together properly. Some of these other customers’ experiences seemed pretty terrible, however, in my experience everything from ordering to delivery to quality went seamlessly.
Buying from Joybird: The Pro’s
Now that we have all the negative stuff out of the way, let’s start with the pro’s. The biggest pro from buying from Joybird has to be all the ways you can truly customize your furniture. They offer so many colors as well as different wood finishes, so you can really have a piece that fits your style and your space perfectly.
Another thing I like about Joybird is their prices. Joybird ranges from $1200-$3500 per couch. Of course this isn’t cheap, but in my opinion, you really get what you pay for with couches. Investing in higher quality furniture is a much better option than opting for something lower quality that isn’t going to last long. With the option to pay off monthly with Aspire, find Joybird to be very accessible and affordable when you consider the quality you are getting for that price.
Joybird also offers a lifetime warranty as well as an excellent optional protection plan. Their lifetime warranty covers “all of the foundational elements of your furniture: wood frames, springs, joints, bases, legs, and hardware, which are integral to the life of your product. We promise to pay standard rates for repair if needed or to provide an alternative solution should the issue be unable to be repaired.” They offer a one year limited warranty that covers “ny manufacturer’s defects or shipping damage to our legs, fabrics, leathers, foams, seams, tufting, mattresses, wood stains, and finishes. If a repair is needed, we will pay standard rates for repair, or provide an alternative solution should the item be unable to be repaired.” So, as far as the quality of your piece is concerned, you are fairly covered when it comes to their warranties.
Like I mentioned, they also offer a protection plan, which you can choose to pay additionally to have. They offer two different options, the “Life Happens” plan and the “Pet Protection” plan. Here’s a graph of what each of those covers:
These plans I think are a no brainer, especially in our case as I insisted on having a white couch, but also love red wine and coffee and I have a tendency to be clumsy. I’m terrible at spilling things, I’ll just be honest with you. For a little under $200, I know my couch is protected for 5 years from any of my blunders. If you have pets, then the pet plan is a truly great deal as it protects from everything in the Life Happens plan, but gives you the additional protection against pet related damages.
If you know that you are abusive on your furniture (maybe you have pets AND small children), Joybird also has fabrics that are specifically stain resistant and easy to clean. Even if you don’t opt for their “pet/kid friendly” fabric options, most of the fabrics they use are fairly easy to clean and come with specific care instructions.
Final Thoughts on My Joybird Couch, 1(ish) year later…
I first of all want to congratulate myself for so far not spilling any coffee or wine on my couch. I am truly proud of this accomplishment, but know as soon as I finish typing this sentence, I’ll knock on the wooden legs just in case.
In a nutshell, I love our couch. I love how modern, sleek, and clean it looks in our apartment. I love that it can fit three adults comfortably, and that I can stretch out and take a nap on it with room to spare, as can my 6 foot tall hubby. A common question I get about this couch is if it is comfortable. The Hughes Grand sofa that we bought is not a super cushy, super loungy type of couch, it has a bit more structure to it, which is what I wanted. So no, this isn’t a couch that you can just sink into like other styles, but it is comfortable. In my opinion, it has the right combination of cushiness with firmness. There’s been many a night that I’ve fallen asleep on this couch with no problem whatsoever. So far, I have no complaints and will definitely be using Joybird in the future for my furniture needs.

Thank you for this blog, we are looking at this couch and it was a really helpful review! Also love Affirm, just wanted to make a small correction that Affirm actually does not charge any penalties, fees, or hidden interest even if you are delinquent on your loan. If you don’t pay them back then you aren’t allowed to use them again or until you repay, but no hidden fees or late charges exist on Affirm 🙂
