Not fond of the spring season because you’re unsure how to style your clothes and transition from winter to the warmer months? Read this guide for layering clothes in the spring to enhance your style!

Layering clothing is all about creating a balance between colors and the style of each garment. You blend neutrals and standout pieces and tight-fitting tops with loose jackets. To find out more about how to layer clothes in the spring, continue reading this helpful guide and maximize your springtime style.

Layering Clothes in the Spring: Start With Basic Neutrals

layering clothes in spring

The foundation of layering an outfit starts with the basics. Neutral colors are a fantastic way to add some of your favorite statement pieces as the outer layer.

The colors include white, beige, tan, black, gray, and navy blue. You can pair a simple, neutral, form-fitting top with a vibrant pink blazer and a light-wash pair of jeans. It’s an incredible way to connect an outfit by using less vivid hues.

Layering Clothes in the Spring: Experiment With Different Textures

Many people focus solely on matching colors and patterns when devising an outfit, but mixing textures is another method to consider.

Look at leather and denim, suede and cotton, wool and satin. Various textures add dimension and interest. Instead of sticking to one type of material throughout an outfit, find textures that complement one another to quickly add interest to a layered outfit.

Layering Clothes in the Spring: Balance Loose and Tight Garments

layering clothes in spring

One of the easiest ways to discover the key to layering clothes in the spring is to balance loose and tight garments. The general rule is to wear one style on top, the opposite on the bottom, and use a piece to bring it all together.

For example, style a western graphic t-shirt that has a looser fit, and pair it with a tight, short skirt. Then, add a long, flowing cardigan over the top to balance the loose and tight components of the outfit. This method will help you create a more proportional outfit that complements your body type.

Work Around the Desired Clothing Item

Layering is challenging because all your favorite items don’t always work together. Whether it’s the fit, textures, or colors, they might not be the ideal match.

As you begin planning an outfit, find the garment you want the look to center around. It might be leather pants, your favorite pair of jeans, a cute blouse, or a gorgeous cardigan. Use this item and scour your wardrobe for pieces that will suit it. Now, you have an outfit you adore and get to wear the piece you’ve been longing for all this time.

Bonus Styling Tip: Wear a Short Skirt With a Long Coat

layering clothes in spring

One of the best features of spring is that you can gradually wear lighter layers and show more skin. In the winter, you must bundle up and protect every inch of your body. But as the freezing temperatures subside, you have more freedom with your outfits.

An opportunity you’ll adore is styling a short skirt with a long coat. The coat can fall to the hips, knees, or calves. It’s an easy way to spice up a professional outfit, as the coat can mimic a blazer.

Finish off the outfit with short booties or knee-high boots. If needed, add a sheer pair of tights for light coverage.

It’s challenging to find harmony between clothing pieces at first. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll become an expert at layering clothes in all seasons.

Your rhinestoned garment is falling apart, the crystals peeling off one by one. Here are 4 common reasons rhinestones fall off and how to fix them.

4 common reasons why rhinestones fall off clothes

After hours of toiling at your craft table, you finally finished attaching rhinestones to your garment. You let it dry, then wore it proudly out in the world. For a while, things went swimmingly. But one day, you noticed something that stopped you cold—a loose rhinestone dangling precariously from the fabric.

here are several things that can cause rhinestones to loosen and fall off clothing. If your garment is shedding rhinestones like a molting bird shedding feathers, and you want to know why, here are four common reasons why rhinestones fall off clothes.

4 Common Reasons Why Rhinestones Fall off Clothes: The Fabric Was Dirty

Your fabric needs to be free of debris, such as dirt, dust, and oil, and fully dry before you attempt to attach rhinestones to it. Otherwise, the glue will attach to the thin layer of debris or moisture on your fabric rather than the fabric itself.

4 Common Reasons Why Rhinestones Fall off Clothes: The Fabric Wasn’t Porous

Non-porous fabric is another common reason why rhinestones fall off clothes. To test if your fabric is porous or not, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water rolls off, the fabric is non-porous.

This is a common issue with leather garments. You can help the glue adhere to slick, non-porous surfaces such as leather by scoring it with sandpaper before attaching your rhinestones.

You Forgot To Stretch the Fabric

If you want to accessorize a stretchy garment, such as a custom dance costume, you need to stretch the fabric first. If you don’t stretch it, the glue’s bond will break, and the rhinestones will pop off the first time you wear your costume. If possible, apply rhinestones while you or a helper is wearing the garment. If that’s not doable, stuff the inside of the garment with cardboard, wax paper, or clean, balled-up garbage bags to stretch it out.

You Attached the Rhinestones Too Quickly or Too Slowly

If you apply your rhinestones too quickly, air can sneak between the stones and the fabric. When this happens, the glue won’t stick evenly and fully. But if you apply your rhinestones too slowly, the glue will prematurely dry and won’t adhere properly to the fabric.

It’s crucial that you apply your rhinestones while the glue is still wet. When you press it onto the garment, pull your tweezers or applicator tip away slowly, then gently press on the rhinestone to push any trapped air out.

If your rhinestones are falling off your garment, you likely skipped a step during the prep phase or were too hasty or cautious with your application. When you reapply the rhinestones, clean and stretch the fabric beforehand and be precise but swift with your movements.

What causes dry, frizzy lashes after lash lifts? Here are some of the most common causes of post-treatment frizz and what to do about it.

frizzy lashes after lash lifts

If you’re looking for a way to enhance the look of your eyelashes, a lash lift might seem like the perfect option. However, some people experience frizzy lashes after getting a lash lift, which can detract from the look they were hoping to achieve. What causes this issue, and how can you prevent it?

Frizzy Lashes After Lash Lifts: Overprocessing

One cause of frizzy lashes after a lash lift is overprocessing. Lash lift treatments involve the use of chemicals to curl the lashes. If your cosmetologist leaves these chemicals on for too long, the lash follicles become over-processed. Over-processed lashes may look frizzy, point in the wrong direction, or split.

Too Much Solution

Using too much solution during a lash lift can lead to frizzy lashes. There are many misconceptions about lash lifts, such as the thought that more solution equals a stronger curl, but this isn’t true. It equals a greater amount of chemicals on the lashes. Overexposure to lash-lifting chemicals strips the lash hairs of their keratin bonds, drying them out and making them brittle, weak, and floppy.

Overly Harsh Chemicals

Another common cause of frizzy lashes after a lash lift is the use of overly harsh chemicals. Some of the chemicals used in lash lifts, such as thioglycolic acid, are extremely strong and hard on delicate strands of lashes. These chemicals can make the lashes dry and brittle. Many salons are switching to products that use gentler ingredients, such as cysteine, to remedy this and achieve the desired curled and lifted effect.

If you have brittle, damaged lashes after a lash lift, we have bad news and good news for you. The bad news is that damaged lashes will never recover to their former glory. The good news is that your current lashes aren’t there to stay. Over the course of a 6–10-week growth cycle, they’ll fall out, and new lashes will take their place. So don’t fret! Wait it out, and you’ll have beautiful, strong, healthy lashes again in no time.

And if you decide that you want to give lash lifts a second shot after your new lashes grow, make sure the salon you visit has trained professionals using products that are safe and kind to your lash hairs.

using the wrong shampoo for your hair

In an ideal world, every shampoo would be able to cleanse every hair type. Unfortunately, this just isn’t the case, and while some shampoos may work wonders for others, they may not cut it for you. If you’re on the fence about ditching and switching, here are a few signs you’re definitely using the wrong shampoo for your hair.

Using the Wrong Shampoo for your Hair: Bad Hair Days Are Every Day

If you are having trouble taming or styling your hair, you may be using the wrong shampoo. Hair that’s frizzy and difficult to manage is a sign that the strands have been stripped of their natural moisture. These oils act as a lubricant that keeps strands from sticking together. Without their natural oils, hair will become stiff and damaged. This damage can also appear as knots that just won’t go away, no matter how much you brush. Use a moisturizing shampoo to lock in hydration and combat bad hair days.

Your Scalp Is Too Dry or Too Greasy

Your scalp shouldn’t feel dry and itchy, nor should it feel overly greasy, especially after you’ve just washed your hair. A greasy scalp is a sign that your shampoo is stripping your skin of its natural oils, and in turn, your sebaceous glands are overproducing oil to make up for it.

If your scalp is overly dry, itchy, or flakey, this is likely a sign that your current shampoo is too harsh and irritating. If you’ve had your hair dyed and notice the color is fading, this is also a sign of harsh shampoo. While you may not have sensitive skin, natural beauty products are worth trying, as they lack harsh ingredients, are more nutrient-rich, and tend to be gentler on the skin.

Your Locks Lack Luster

Healthy hair has a natural shine to it, and dull hair is the number one sign that you’re using the wrong shampoo for your hair. Dull hair comes from a lack of nutrients, and if your shampoo isn’t providing your hair with those nutrients or is stripping them away, you need to ditch it. Shampoos with argan oil, shea butter, and coconut oil can provide essential nutrients and add shine without making your hair look heavy and greasy. Although, you may want to use a clarifying shampoo first to get rid of all that build-up from previous products.

Ultimately, everyone’s body is different, and even the most “holy grail” products may not work for you. If you notice any of the above symptoms, try switching your shampoo to see what works for you.

how to channel your preppy aesthetic

Are you a fan of Clueless or Blair Waldorf’s wardrobe? Learn how to channel your preppy aesthetic with style tips inspired by classic, preppy onscreen stars.

From Blair Waldorf to Cher Horowitz, many onscreen fashionistas know how to rock the preppy style aesthetic, making it a go-to style option for many sharp dressers and pop-culture enthusiasts. Like academia-inspired fashion, preppy lookbooks include polished features, but they come with a more colorful palette. Here are four ways to channel your preppy aesthetic and embrace your inner Blair and Cher.

How to Channel Your Preppy Aesthetic

Incorporate Preppy Classics

Every fashion aesthetic consists of classic elements that embody the essence of that style. For example, signature pieces of ballerinacore include white and pink pastel color schemes, flowy and frilled skirts, and strappy shoes. For traditional streetwear, key outfit concepts include baggy bottoms, graphic tees, and sneakers.

Whenever you wear certain clothing pairings and outfit options that are identifiable features of a particular aesthetic, you also embody that style. Channel your preppiness with signature pieces to the aesthetic, like blazers, button-downs, vests, and pleated skirts.

Create Outfit Layers

Layers are also a quintessential style feature of preppy outfits. Traditionally, the various layers were a means of proper etiquette, ensuring that students and professionals dress modestly.

Now, they are a key feature of this American subculture and a great way to create chic winter outfits. Pair button-downs with sweaters, add vests and blazers as a top layer, and wear stockings or knee-high socks to style a layered, preppy look.

How to channel your preppy aesthetic: Stick To Simple Shapes and Clean Cuts

Preppy outfits feature clean, well-kept, and professional appearances, alluding to its preparatory and posh cultural background. The smarter you dress, the more affluent you look. Stick to clothing with simple shapes and clean cuts to achieve that well-maintained and upper-class look associated with preppy culture.

Accessorize With Minimalistic Delicacy

Along with clean cuts and simple shapes, minimal accessorization also creates clean, put-together, and smartly dressed appearances. It reduces the visual clutter to your outfit, keeping it simple, sleek, and chic. If you want to embellish a preppy outfit, opt for dainty accessories, like plain headbands, pearl earrings, studs, hoops, bows, and necklaces with thin chains. Avoid anything chunky or too vibrant.

Style some looks inspired by the Gossip Girl queen Blair and Clueless starlet Cher with these four tips on channeling your preppy aesthetic. Whether your life consists of dinners at country clubs or the complete opposite, anyone can sport this posh aesthetic. You just need the right wardrobe pieces and styling technique.

Got Lake Tahoe Summer travel on the brain? I’ve got a three-day travel guide to help you have the ultimate summer getaway to this charming mountain town.

Looking for the ULTIMATE Lake Tahoe Summer travel guide for an incredible weekend getaway? You have come to the right place! I recently took a trip up to South Lake Tahoe with my girls in the Babes that Wander. We had an amazing three days exploring this beautiful piece of mountain paradise in Northern California. Whether or love the great outdoors or your idea of being outdoorsy is sipping a beer on a patio, this travel guide has a little something for everyone.

Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Guide

I’ve been to Lake Tahoe several times, but this was my first Tahoe summer vacation. While I love hitting the slopes during the winter and playing in the snow, the Lake Tahoe area is such a different place in the warmer months. From hiking, action water sports, or relaxing and the beach, there are so many things to do and experience!

Lake Tahoe summer travel guide

Please note, this travel guide is oriented to the South Lake Tahoe area, and won’t be covering North Lake Tahoe. If you’re interested in seeing our last ski trip to Palisades and a bit of the Tahoe City area, check out my vlog on that here.

Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Guide: Getting to Lake Tahoe

If you are a Californian like I am, getting to Lake Tahoe could be as simple as a road trip. Of course, this depends on where you are located. My husband and I have done the drive from Los Angeles, which is about 7 hours. If you are not nearby, the nearest airport is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The drive from this airport to South Lake Tahoe is about 45 minutes to one hour.

While you don’t need a car for Lake Tahoe summer travel, I would highly recommend it. Lake Tahoe is a pretty expansive, spread-out area. If you really want to be able to explore it fully, you’ll need a car to do so. That being said, there are a couple of ways to get around if you absolutely can’t rent a car:

Lake Tahoe Travel Guide: Getting to and from the airport via the Tahoe Airporter
  1. You can get from the airport to the South Lake Tahoe area via the South Tahoe Airporter. This is a shuttle service that leaves from the Reno-Tahoe Airport about 4 times per day. It costs roughly $60 round trip, or just under $30 for a one-way ticket. The shuttle drops off and picks up at multiple stops, including Edgewood, Hardrock, Harrah’s, Harvey’s, Lakeside, LTRH, and Montbleu.
  2. Alternatively, you can request an Uber or Lyft to get you to and from the airport. This is a much more expensive option. On our trip, the cost seemed to range from $88-$140 for a one-way trip.
  3. Once in the South Lake area, you can get around using Lake Link. This is a new micro transit shuttle service that is FREE, and will get you around the South Lake area. Make sure to download the app before your trip.
  4. If you are in the downtown South Lake area proper, everything is super walkable. There also seemed to be a wealth of e-scooters around if you prefer to get to your destination a little faster.

Where to Stay in South Lake Tahoe

There are quite a few options when visiting Lake Tahoe. You can opt to stay at one of the big casino resorts, such as Harrah’s or Hardrock if you like the feel of a large resort and want to be centrally located. There are also a bunch of smaller boutique hotels to choose from. Or, if you want to be a little more secluded, you can rent a cabin. Here are my Lake Tahoe accommodation recommendations for different price points:

Hotel Becket

Hotel Becket Lake Tahoe

Hotel Becket is a great option if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly stay with an excellent location. I love the rustic-chic vibes of the rooms and suites. They have a great pool and sauna as well as a pub on site. This is a great spot if you are coming to South Lake Tahoe without a car. It is very centrally located.

Lake Tahoe Accommodations

On the first leg of our trip, we were hosted by Lake Tahoe Accommodations in one of their vacation rental cabins. They service not only South Lake Tahoe but have vacation rentals all around the lake. This is a great option if you are looking for a more quiet, secluded escape. Its also a great option if you are coming with a larger family or group of friends. The decor of our cabin was just what you’d expect: rustic and cozy.

Desolation Hotel

Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Guide

When I tell you I was absolutely WOW’ed by the Desolation Hotel, it’s almost an understatement. This is a brand-new micro luxury resort in South Lake Tahoe. They call themselves the “modern adventurer’s paradise,” and I’d have to say that is spot on. We got to stay at Desolation Hotel on the second half of our trip in their Alpine Suite, and it was such a treat. The decor feels both luxe but cozy in a sort of Hygee/Scandinavian way. The Alpine Suite comes complete with a spacious master bedroom, outdoor soaking tub, kitchen, bathroom (complete with heated floor), and spacious living room with a queen pullout sleeper bed.

If a standard hotel room or suite isn’t big enough, Desolation also offers townhomes. These come complete with their own garage, including an EV charger. I imagine this would totally come in clutch in the winter. No digging or shoveling your car out of the snow! They also have an awesome pool and hot tub area, a gym, and a sauna. Plus, the staff is incredibly warm, welcoming, and made us feel right at home. This is a practice they carry with all their guests and truly made our entire stay there so special.

Tahoe Summer Outdoor Activities: Hiking

Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Guide

You can’t come to Tahoe and not head into the mountains! In the winter, that involves sliding down them on whatever your vehicle is of choice. In the summer, its a bit the opposite. There are so many amazing trails worth exploring in South Lake Tahoe. One area that I think offers a great hike, scenic views, and interesting history all in one destination is Emerald Bay.
To get to Emerald Bay, take California State Route 89 west until you reach the Emerald Bay parking area on your right. You’ll know it by this sign:

Hiking in South Lake Tahoe: Emerald Bay State park

The parking lot may be full, especially on weekends. If so, there are other parking areas along the road, just be careful and pay attention to the signs to know where you’re allowed to park. In general, the parking lot may be full, but there always seemed to be people coming and going, so if you wait it out for a couple minutes you’re likely to find someone who is leaving.
This is a paid parking lot, and parking costs I believe $10 for the day. Once you have your parking squared away, you’ll begin about a 1 mile descent down to Emerald Bay. The walk down is easy, but the walk back up is tough, so if you aren’t able to climb back up for about a mile at an incline, do not attempt this hike. Personally, I thought the hike was pretty easy since it was just one mile down and one mile up.

Hiking in South Lake Tahoe: Emerald Bay State Park

Once you reach the bottom, you have arrived in beautiful Emerald Bay! From here, you can keep exploring the trails of the Rubicon trail, or enjoy the other activities in Emerald Bay state park. You can also cool off at the gorgeous beach and take a tour of Vikingsholm.

Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay State Park

Now, you might wonder what a Viking Castle is doing in the Sierra Nevadas. This building, which is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States, was built in 1928 by Ms. Lora Josephine Knight as a vacation home. You can take a tour of the inside from late May- late September if you’re interested in checking it out! Just head over to the Visitors Center just past Vikingsholm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students age 7-17, and free for children under age 7.

South Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Guide

We opted to venture out to Fannette Island in the middle of Emerald Bay. This is the only island in all of Lake Tahoe. Remember Ms. Knight who I mentioned a second ago? She built a little castle tea room on the top of this island and would ferry her guests out there from time to time. To get there, we rented kayaks right on the beach from a rental company. They offer kayaks and stand up paddle boards for rent by the hour. I believe we paid around $45/hour for a double kayak. The kayak over to the island is short and easy. Its the docking of your kayak on the rocky shore is a little tricky. Be prepared! Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet, bring waterproof bags/cases for your phone, and don’t bring anything with you that you won’t want to get wet.

Kayaking to Fannette Island Lake Tahoe

Once on the island, its a short but rocky hike up to the remains of the tea room at the top. The tea room is basically a shell of its former self without a roof. Its definitely cool to see and the views of Emerald Bay from here are stunning. This is a cool experience that I would say is a must if you are planning a Lake Tahoe Summer Travel adventure!

On a side note, I just have to shout out these Bear Paw hiking boots I wore on this hike. This is my first ever pair of hiking boots. I can’t stress enough how much of a difference it makes on your hike when you have these versus just a pair of sneakers. Its night and day! I felt much more confident in the moments when I had to scramble up and down rocks. Get this pair here!

Bearpaw Women's Hiking Boots

You also might check out Van Sickle State Park. Here you’ll find easy to moderate hiking trails in the South Lake Tahoe area. Its a short walk from the stateline Nevada casinos, making it one of the most accessible state parks in the Tahoe Basin. From these trails you can see some gorgeous views of the largest alpine lake in America. For more information on this park and its trails, click here!

There are so many popular hiking trails to choose from, so you really can’t go wrong! I highly recommend downloading an app like Alltrails, which is great for finding hiking trails near you. You can see each trail’s difficulty level, duration, and reviews on the trail experience left by past hikers. Plus, the app includes maps so you can make sure you are on the right path while on your hike!

Tahoe Summer Activities: Kayaking

Clear Kayaking in South Lake Tahoe

If you’re more into watersports, of course there is plenty of that to be had in the summer in Lake Tahoe. We checked out Clearly Tahoe, which is a clear kayaking tour that is great for all kayaking skill levels. The tour begins in the Tahoe Marina, where you depart on a boat that takes you and your kayak out into the middle of the lake. Once you’ve reached your destination, the tour guides help you get into your clear bottom kayak and your kayaking tour begins.

When we went it was September. While the weather was nice in the sun, it was a bit chilly when you were in the shade or on the boat going to and from the kayaking point. I’d recommend wearing activewear that you don’t mind getting wet, a tank top or a tee, and bring a light jacket. This way, you can take layers off and on as needed. Don’t forget your sunscreen either! Because you are so much closer to the sun in Lake Tahoe, the sun is more intense…don’t get sunburnt!

Lake Tahoe summer travel must have #1 is sunscreen…try this one from Supergoop…its literally my favorite face sunscreen and makes a great makeup primer as well.

Tahoe Summer Activities: Heavenly Village, Gondola and Mountain Coaster

Mountain gondola ride in South Lake Tahoe

One place that is sure to offer all kinds of outdoor fun all year long is Heavenly. This Lake Tahoe resort offers amazing skiing in the winter and a whole plethora of fun in the summer. If you want to take in the view from the top of the mountain, catch a ride on the Heavenly mountain gondola ride. You can do this year round, but in the summer you definitely have more opportunity to get out, walk around, and enjoy the mountain than you could in the winter….assuming you’re not there to ski!

Heavenly Mountain Lookout Point
Heavenly Mountain Gondola Ride Scenic View

If you want a little bit of adrenaline, check out the mountain coaster. This coaster runs through the summer months, but unfortunately was done with the season by the time we visited in late September. That being said, I’ve been on a similar mountain coaster in Copper Mountain, Colorado, and I can tell you from experience that they are a blast. These coasters have brakes on them, so you can control the speed of the coaster as you descend. Whether you want to go full speed, or go at a leisurely pace and enjoy the view, its totally up to you.

While you’re up at the top of Heavenly Mountain, you can also enjoy all the fun at their ropes course. This wasn’t something we did but if I’d had more time up there, I totally would’ve wanted to give it a try.

Lake Tahoe Summer Travel Activities: Yoga on the Beach

Maybe you like to get a little zen while you travel. I couldn’t think of a better way to do that then a yoga class on the beach with Lake Tahoe Yoga. They offer group and private yoga classes led by highly experienced guides. You can do a beach session, or if you want to get out on the water, they also offer paddle board yoga classes. It was so relaxing to take in a quiet practice by the beautiful waters of Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Summer Activities: Tahoe Tastings Wine Cruise

Tahoe Tastings Wine Cruise
Tahoe Tastings Wine Cruise

I am a girl who loves going wine tasting, so when you combine that activity with a relaxing cruise out on to Lake Tahoe, I am all in. Tahoe Tastings is a wine tasting cruise that departs from the Tahoe Keys Marina multiple times a day. They offer a Midday, Afternoon, and Sunset cruise daily from May through October.

I loved the whole experience, from beginning to end. You step aboard the Golden Rose, which is a vintage, one of a kind 1953 Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi. I definitely felt like I had stepped into another era while we were sailing along the lake on this boat. The tasting includes 6 different wines. At the end of the tasting, you have the opportunity to buy a glass of wine or bottle from the tasting to enjoy for the duration of the cruise.

Tahoe Summer Activities: South Lake Tahoe Beer Trail

If you’re more of a beer person, you can stay on dry land and taste all the incredible breweries that are around South Lake Tahoe. There are so many great local breweries to try out. This handy map shows you the 6 breweries on the South Lake Tahoe Beer trail so you can plan your beer adventure through town.

South Lake Tahoe Beer Trail

We actually tried one that wasn’t on this map, South of North. It was walking distance from the Desolation Hotel, and offered a really cute outdoor patio area to enjoy the gorgeous weather. I could also imagine it would be a great Apres spot to hit after you’ve enjoyed one of the ski resorts in winter as well!

Where to Eat + Drink in South Lake Tahoe

Where to eat and drink in South Lake Tahoe

No trip is complete without great food, am I right or am I right? Here’s some of our favorite spots we checked out in South Lake that I highly recommend!

Sprouts Cafe: Perfect for a quick and healthy lunch

If you’re looking for a spot that is quick, affordable, and on the healthy side, Sprouts a must! We grabbed lunch here and loved it. They have plenty of indoor seating, as well as a great patio for those beautiful summer days, definitely a must for a Lake Tahoe summer travel itinerary when you’re on the go.

Base Camp Pizza

I’ve had Base Camp Pizza a couple times before on past trips, and I can confirm it is so so delicious! They serve up gourmet Italian style pizza that is sure to satisfy those cravings. Be aware, they do not take reservations, and wait times can be up to two hours during peak seasons in summer and winter. Avoid waiting forever by checking in early and putting your name on the list. They will text you when your table is ready. You can also order take out and avoid the waitlist altogether.

Lakeview Social

Lakeview Social in South Lake Tahoe

If you’re looking for a casual spot to enjoy a beautiful night outdoors with live music, Lakeview Social is perfect. Their menu mostly consists of bar style food: thing burgers, wings etc. They also have local beer on tap as well as a great wine list to choose from. We got cozy next to one of the firepits and settled into our rocking chairs and enjoyed the music while we watched a gorgeous sunset. I am definitely pinning this place to come back for apres ski in the winter.

Toulouse

Toulouse South Lake Tahoe

Another great spot that is casual and great for brunch, lunch, or dinner is Toulouse. Their menu featuers local, sustainable ingredients that put a Tahoe spin on New Orleans style fare. I have to recommend their gumbo as well as the salmon…both dishes were incredible! We got to meet the owner and get the lowdown on the remodel they have planned for this space….its going to be so cool when its done, I can’t wait to come back and see it!

Toulouse South Lake Tahoe

Jimmy’s at the Landing

Jimmy's at the Landing Lake Tahoe

For brunch, we checked out Jimmy’s at the Landing. The food on their brunch menu was top notch. We ordered a bunch of stuff and ate family style so we got to try a bit of everything. In true millennial fashion, the avocado toast was my favorite, followed by the smoked salmon benedict, but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

Maggie’s at Desolation Hotel

Maggie's South Lake Tahoe

Not only is Desolation Hotel a badass hotel, they also have a really great new restaurant to add to the South Lake Tahoe dining scene. Maggie’s is located on the rooftop of the Desolation Hotel and offers an elevated dining experience that is both casual and elegant and feels local but also worldly. They have a small indoor space and bar as well as a small outdoor patio, so I would recommend grabbing a reservation just to make sure you can get in and savor their wonderful menu.

The Bistro at Edgewood

Edgewood Lake Tahoe

Now, if you’re looking for a truly luxe, upscale dining experience, The Bistro at Edgewood is where it is at. Their menu offers New American Seasonal Fare in a breathtaking setting. We opted for a table outside on the patio, which offered a gorgeous view of the lake and the sunset. Definitely make sure to try a cocktail on their drink menu, each one is such an interesting combination of ingredients. I got the lamb chops and they were pure delight.

Community Speakeasy

Community Speakeasy South Lake Tahoe

I can’t make a travel guide and not throw in a fun bar to check out. I do love a good speakeasy, they just have so much more of a fun vibe than just any old bar. Community Speakeasy is located inside Social House Craft Sandwiches in Heavenly Village. We asked the bartender where we might find the speakeasy, and he directed us toward what appeared to be a large walk-in refridgerator door. Once we walked through we were transported to a cozy, dark, and very vibey speakeasy. The cocktails on their list are all very inventive and interesting. The bartenders and servers are there to help guide you to the best choice based on your liquor and flavor preferences. Note that it is a small space, so when you visit is possible that they will have a waitlist to enter. Again, make sure if you visit during peak season to get your name on the list early so you can be sure to get in and check it out.

I hope you enjoyed these travel tips for Lake Tahoe Summer travel! Feel free to drop your favorite South Lake Tahoe spots in the comments so I can check them out next time!

South Lake Tahoe FAQ’s

What is South Lake Tahoe known for?

South Lake Tahoe is known for gorgeous mountain views, the stunningly blue and clear Lake Tahoe, gorgeous beaches, and of course, their world renowned ski resorts. South Lake Tahoe is also known for its casinos, as the Nevada-California state line runs through the town. During the summer, you can enjoy the great outdoors to the fullest by walking or biking along the beach, enjoying a hike, or going out on the lake.

Is North or South Lake Tahoe better?

I have been to both, and I would say South Lake Tahoe is better if you are looking for a more vibrant night life scene with lots of different dining options. South Lake seems to have much more of a city feel, where as North Lake Tahoe is a bit more quiet in comparison and feels more rugged. If you want both a relaxing getaway with the opportunity to explore some great dining and nightlife experiences, then South Lake Tahoe is for you! For Lake Tahoe summer travel, I would most definitely recommend South Lake.

Is Lake Tahoe Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! I would recommend coming here both in the summer and the winter, as both season offer such a different experience from each other. I love to ski, but I really loved coming during summer and getting to experience the beauty of the lake and the gorgeous weather and fresh air. No matter what time of year you find yourself here, it is sure to be a recharging stay because you just feel so much more connected to nature here.

If you’ve found yourself on this post, you’re probably looking to get away. You’ve come to the right place! The Florida Keys is the perfect tropical getaway. Duck Key, Florida is smack in the middle of this tropical paradise. Its the perfect launch point to discover all the Keys has to offer.

I recently took an amazing trip to Duck Key, Florida, and had an absolute blast! We spent two days at Hawks Cay resort, and another two days down in Key West. Read about Key West in my previous post here. While Key West definitely offers a lot in terms of history, culture, and nightlife, our time in Duck Key Florida, and Hawk’s Cay were perfect for slowing down and getting in some much-needed R&R!

Getting to Duck Key Florida

To get to this area of the Keys, you have a couple of options. The first option is of course to drive down. Once you hit Miami, it’s about an hour and a half (105 miles) till you reach Duck Key. You can also fly if you’re coming from some far-flung area like California like I was. The cheaper option is to fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, rent a car, and drive from there. The drive is really gorgeous. There are stunning views everywhere you look as you cruise the overseas highway.

Duck Key is close to Marathon, which is a larger area that does have an international airport. I was pretty shocked by this fact, and I can imagine flights into that airport are pretty pricey. It is an option, should you prefer it!

Where to Stay

Hawk's Cay Resort in Duck Key Florida

It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling with your family, your significant other, or your friends: Hawk’s Cay Resort is the perfect spot to stay in Duck Key, and, arguably, the greater Marathon/Islamorada area. This resort truly has it all. You can rest and relax by one of their pools, dine at their six restaurants, swim with dolphins, or participate in all kinds of water sports, all without leaving the property.

Hawk’s Cay (61 Hawks Cay Blvd) is great for groups of all sizes. They have a hotel property as well as vacation rental villas to choose from when booking your stay. The hotel is great if you want to be close to all the amenities on the property. The villas are perfect for bigger families or groups of friends traveling together. We loved our villa! It had three bedrooms and bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious living area, as well as gorgeous views of the waterway. There was definitely plenty of room for everyone in our group to be comfortable and enjoy their stay.

Hawk's Cay Villa in Duck Key Florida

The great thing about Hawk’s Cay is that they seem to effectively cater to both families and people who want to have a more adult-only experience. We loved hanging out by the tranquility pool that was child-free. It was much quieter and more relaxing than the main pool!

Duck key florida hawk's cay resort

Hawk’s Cay also features a gorgeous saltwater beach/ lagoon that guests can enjoy if they want a more beachy experience. One thing I was surprised to find when I visited the Keys for the first time was that there aren’t a ton of places to hang out on a beach. I loved the lagoon area because it made me feel like I was truly in a tropical paradise.

Angler and Ale Duck Key Florida Restaurants

If you’re like me, then having some incredible meals is a very important part of any vacation. Hawk’s Cay has 6 dining options on property. We loved Angler and Ale, which is a casual waterfront dining option with a great cocktail list and some mouth-watering fresh seafood. Definitely try out the ahi nachos! Their patio offers gorgeous views of the water and the marina.

Hawk's Cay Duck Key Resort

If you’re looking for something quick and easy when it comes to food, Hawk’s Cay also has a marketplace with a Starbucks as well as a pizzeria and a great selection of snacks, beverages, and wine for purchase. The marketplace came in clutch because Duck Key is a little bit out in the middle of nowhere- the nearest convenience store was a 15 minute drive away. It was so nice to have access to some snacks when the munchies hit.

What to do near Duck Key

You could stay on site and never leave the Hawk’s Cay, but there are some great beaches to hit up nearby. If you are looking for a gorgeous beach, make sure to check out Key Colony Beach. This is a stunning white sand beach area nearby in Marathon. Coco Plum Beach is a free beach that is great for turtle or turtle track spotting. Did you know that Marathon is the turtle capital of the Florida Keys? You can also pay a visit to their Turtle Hospital which rehabilitates injured turtles found in the Keys.

Things to do in Duck Key, Florida

There are so many fun outdoor activities to do in the Keys. My favorite had to be going parasailing for the first time. Parasailing is something I’ve always wanted to try but never had the opportunity until this trip. I was a little nervous, but once you get up in the air, it is surprisingly relaxing. Floating high above the turquoise waters, it’s actually really peaceful and quiet. You can’t beat the view!

We took a parasailing excursion that left from Robbie’s in Islamorada, which leads me to my next point of interest…

Duck Key Florida Travel Guide

Robbie’s of Islamorada was voted the #1 place for every tourist to visit in the Keys. You can chill at the Hungry Tarpon Restaurant and Bar and enjoy the waterfront view. Shop for local handmade goods and souvenirs from various vendors. If you want to get out on the water, Robbie’s offers tons of options from a sunset cruise, snorkeling excursions, parasailing, and fishing excursions. There really is something for everyone here! Make sure to leave your mark and staple a dollar bill somewhere on the bar.

During our visit, we also stopped by the Islamorada Brewery and Distillery. This is a local business that makes different spirits (including vodka, rum, gin, and more) as well as various different types of beer. Despite the fact that this is a distillery and brewery, it is a family-friendly establishment. Out back, they have a fun outdoor area with plenty of seating and fun yard games. The adults can sip while the kids play. I highly recommend getting a flight. This allows you to choose four different beverages of your choice across their beer, liquor, batched, and frozen cocktail selections. My favorite had to be the frozen key lime cocktail….I still dream about it!

Islamorada Brewing Company
Morada Bay Cafe Duck Key Florida

After a day out on the water and sipping on local brews, we grabbed dinner at the Morada Bay Beach Cafe. This restaurant is an upscale casual restaurant right on the water and offers delicious, fresh seafood, great customer service, and stunning views at sunset. If you want something a bit more upscale, you can also check out Pierre’s Lounge and Dining Room right next door. Pierre’s offers French fusion cuisine in a beautiful, colonial style home. This restaurant does have a dress code they describe as “casual elegance,” though no jackets or ties are required.

We had a great time in Duck Key Florida! If you’re interested, I have a video that rounds up this blog post…check it out, and make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel!

Next time I visit the Keys, I definitely would love to hit up Key Largo, which is one area we didn’t get to stop in, though I have heard that it is beautiful! Have you ever visited the Florida Keys? Drop me a comment and let me know what you love to do and see while in the Florida Keys!

Florida Keys FAQ

What is Duck Key Florida known for?

This area was known for salt production in the 1820’s and 30’s. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane basically made this area uninhabitable until the key was connected to the highway by a causeway in 1953.

How do you get to Duck Key?

Duck Key Florida is an hour and twenty minute drive from the Key West International Airport, and a two hour drive from Miami International airport. You can access the island via the overseas highway.

Why are there so few beaches in the Florida Keys?

People are quite surprised to learnt that a tropical destination like the Florida Keys actually doesn’t have a ton of beaches. This is because the Keys are a collection of Coral islands, which were former coral reefs. These islands were once submerged beneath the ocean when water levels were higher.

how to shop the nordstrom anniversary sale

Y’all….it is THAT time of year again…the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! If you hang out in fashion circles on the internet, then you know this is one of the best sales to shop all year long, so today I’m gonna share all the details on how to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale like a pro. If you’re not familiar with the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and all its glory, it is a yearly sale that occurs in mid-late summer here’s why its a sale you definitely do not want to miss….first of all, it is one of the only sales I know of that marks down brand new items for the upcoming season. Typically, sales consist of marked down items from the current or previous season as a means for retailers to free up space for new inventory coming in. With the NSale, you can snag the hottest pieces for the up and coming season at amazing prices.

How to Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Dates to Know

This sale spans about a month in time, and there are important dates to note so that you make sure you don’t miss out on anything. One very important thing to note about this sale is it is, for all intents and purposes, a cardholder sale. Therefore, if you want to really take advantage of this sale, I suggest getting the Nordstrom card, if only to have early access as a lot of times, some of the best items will sell out before the general access date hits. I know, it can be upsetting, but this is sort of Nordstrom’s way of thanking their cardholders each year. Even within the cardholders, there is a hierarchy of dates when shoppers can gain access to shop the sale. I myself am only at “influencer” status, so while I can get in earlier than the general public, its towards the end of early access. Here’s all the important dates to know:

  • June 29th: Everyone gets access to the Nordstrom Sale Preview
  • July 6th: Icons get access to shop.
  • July 7th: Ambassadors get access to shop.
  • July 9: Influencers get access to shop.
  • July 15th: Everyone gets access to shop.
  • July 31st: Prices go back up.

Just a quick note, because I did just advocate for getting a credit card just to shop a sale. The best way I know how to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary sale each year is to have this card. I was lucky enough to snag the debit card version years ago, which I’m certain they don’t offer anymore, but I am a full believer in having credit cards so they can benefit and work for you. If you grab the card for this sale, make sure to spend within your means and pay it off immediately!

How to Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Prep Time

  1. Ok, so step one in the NSale madness is to prep before the sale even gets started, and I believe the first thing you should do is set a budget for yourself each year. Figure out what you can spend and make sure you stick to it! This sale can get a bit overwhelming, and I find that I end up wanting so many things, so deciding on what I am allowed to spend before the sale starts is so key.

2. Next, download the Nordstrom App to your phone, if you don’t already have it. Having the app on your phone is a great way to be alerted when items you want are re-stocked.

3. Check out the sale preview that goes live on July 6th. They are making this available to everyone this year, so a great idea is to scroll through the preview and add all the items you love to your favorites on their site or in the app.

4. After I’ve taken a look at the preview and hearted all my favs, another crucial step to take before the Nordstrom Anniversary sale starts is to take stock of your wardrobe. What are you missing? Do you have some very well loved pieces that possibly need replacing because they’re getting worn out? Are you lacking some classic basics that would make your daily routine of getting dressed easier? Make note of these things that you NEED and check out your favorited items to see if anything in the sale coincides with your wants and needs.

5. Once you’ve worried about your own wardrobe, it might be a good idea to brainstorm about any gifting you may be doing in the future….I know July seems like a long ways from the holidays, but its not a bad idea to get a jump on your holiday shopping during this sale, as they always have so many great items for not only women, but men, kids, and home items. This is potentially a great way to get super ahead of holiday shopping and do so on a budget as well…win win!

Ok….now its your turn to shop! Here’s what to do:

How to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale once its your turn to shop….its GO time! As soon as the sale goes live for your category that you fall into, go into your favorites that you’ve decided you will purchase and add them to your cart. Do not hesitate, just go! I would advise if you really love something and you’re not sure how it will fit, buy it in multiple sizes to ensure that you get the proper fit. I can’t tell you the pain of past years when I didn’t do this, waited the week or so for my items to arrive at my doorstep, only to find that they didn’t fit and then the size I probably needed was already sold out. Its the WORST. Nordstrom offers free shipping and returns, so really there’s no excuse to just order a little bit more and return what you don’t need for safety’s sake.

Here’s a little extra tip for all the Nordstrom cardholders out there- on the day that I order my items for the NSale, I opt for that day to be my double points day so I can earn a Nordy Note. I know for a fact that the Nordstrom Anniversary sale is when I do the vast majority of my purchasing at Nordstrom, so its a safe bet for me that that is the most beneficial day for me to take advantage of the double points.

How to Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Like a Pro

My #Nsale Wishlist for This Year:

  1. A good duster cardigan in a solid, neutral color
  2. everyday black booties
  3. new sneakers for working out….I’m way overdue! I’m 99% they will be Nike’s as that is my go-to brand for gym shoes
  4. Spanx Leather Leggings: I have the moto version but I really want the classic pair

My “maybe” list:

  1. Classic tops: I need some more classic tops/blouses in neutral colors, I find my wardrobe is really lacking in this department. I have this in the maybe section because I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to find this year but I hope they have a good selection in this category.
  2. Jeans: I’m always in the market for a great pair of denim at the right price. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open for some straight leg denim from Levi’s or Good American.
  3. Home Decor: I’m always looking for cute stuff for the house….I don’t particularly NEED anything at the moment but I’m definitely going to be checking out this section to see if anything catches my eye.

The Best Items to Shop At the NSale

Year after year, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale offers a lot of similar products. Not all the deals are created equally, in my opinion. When it comes to how I shop the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, I have to be careful. I am definitely one of those people who the psychology of a sale really gets to me….I think to myself, wow this is such a great deal because its marked down, I need it! I want to break down for you what I believe to be the best things to shop at the Nordstrom Sale:

  1. Classics/Basics: I usually use this sale as a chance to stock up on basics or fill in gaps in my basics wardrobe. I fully believe that classics and basics are worth splurging on, so this sale makes it so much cheaper to get those higher quality basics that you will wear time and again.
  2. Designer Handbags: Have you had your eye on a higher-end handbag for a while now? The Nordstrom sale is the perfect time to snag it! You won’t beat the price from this sale, so if you can afford it and you’ve been thinking about it for a while, just do it.
  3. Beauty tools: Ok, so we shall see when the preview goes live, but for the past couple years, my go-to at home red light therapy device, the Dr. Dennis Gross Spectralite Faceware Pro mask has been marked down about $80 every year. Fingers crossed this happens again this year, but that being said, there are always some great beauty devices that are pretty pricey that get marked down during this sale.
  4. Athleisure: If you love higher end athletic and athleisurewear, this is the sale for you! Every year, there are so many great markdowns from brands like Nike, Adidas, Alo Yoga and more.
  5. Beauty Gift Sets: There are always incredible beauty gift sets in this sale from all the popular brands like MAC, Benefit, Becca, and more. This is a great time to snag some holiday gifts for the beauty lovers on your list.
  6. Boots: This is when I always shop for a new pair of boots for the upcoming fall season. There are always so many to choose from.
  7. Fall fashion: The NSale is always a great little preview of the upcoming fall fashion trends and trending pieces. The only thing that sucks is having to wait a couple months before you can really wear your new fall duds!
  8. Lingerie: Need a new bra or maybe some shapewear? There are always incredible, high end brands who have items in this sale.
  9. Winter Coats: Winter coats are definitely something you don’t want to skimp on when it comes to quality, so they tend to be bigger purchases. The Nsale always has a ton of great ones at amazing prices so you can fill that gap in your outerwear collection without spending a ton of money.

That’s it! Those are all my tips and tricks on how to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! Comment below and let me know if there’s any pro shopping tips that I left out, and stay tuned because I’ll be having all kinds of shopping guides for this sale here on Missmoorestyle.com…..I’ll have them linked below, so if you bookmark this page you’ll be sure to be up to date on all my latest posts. Key West offers something for everyone. It felt like the perfect mix of slowing down and relaxing by the water, drink in hand, with plenty of history, culture, and adventure. Just the way I love to travel!

Hey, if you prefer to watch a video, I’ve got this entire trip in vlog form here:

Getting to Key West

To get to Key West, Florida, you’ve got two options. The easiest is to fly into the Key West Airport and go from there. That being said, because it is a smaller airport, the fares to fly there can be a little pricer. You can also fly into the Miami airport, rent a car, and drive down to Key West. The drive from Miami takes about three hours, FYI. Its a gorgeous drive and you can check out the views along the seven mile bridge as you go!

Key West airport

We decided to do the latter, and make a stop for a couple nights in Duck Key. Make sure to check out that post here for more Florida Keys travel ideas!

Where to Stay in Key West

On my trip to Key West with my girls in Babes that Wander, we stayed at the Southernmost Beach Resort, and loved every bit of our stay! This hotel is located in Old Town Key West. It’s a super easy walking distance to Duval Street as well as the beach.

Southernmost Beach Resort Tranquility Pool

Southernmost Beach Resort is a newly renovated beach resort in Key West and boasts 3 pools, multiple bars, a private beach as well as a sandbar, private beach, tanning pier, fitness center, and a spa. They also have tons of scheduled activities on property, such as morning yoga, wine tastings, live music, and, something that looked so interesting to me….”Salsa and Shots.” Check out their current events here!

Key West Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in the Keys!

Key West Itinerary

Day 1: Key West Itinerary

The first thing we did when we arrived was check into our hotel at Southernmost Beach Resort. After dropping our bags in our room, we headed down to the resort’s Pineapple Pool where they had some live music. After a quick dip, we walked down to the resort’s Beachside Cafe for lunch. This is also where the resort’s private beach is located. You will find that the Keys doesn’t have a ton of beaches, so it was nice to have access to the lounge chairs on this white sand beach!

The Beach Cafe is pretty delish! Even if you’re not staying at Southernmost, it is definitely one to check out and it has a great beach view. Definitely try the Key Lime Colada, it is to die for!

Key West Itinerary

There are so many great Key West landmarks around the Southernmost Resort, so we took the afternoon to explore…

Southernmost Guest House Key West

Not to be confused with our hotel, the Southernmost Guest House is a very quaint and historical option for accomodations in Key West. Check it out if you prefer a boutique hotel that is adults only. They also have a bar that (according to them) is the closest you can get to Cuba. This is the southernmost home in the continental US, and was built in 1897. It definitely is rich in charm! Definitely grab a mojito from their oceanside bar.

Key West Southernmost House

The Key West Butterfly Conservatory

Right across the street from our hotel was the Key West Butterfly Conservatory. This is definitely a spot to check out, and it will probably take you 30-45 minutes tops to see it. This small topical oasis is home to 50-60 different butterfly species as well as 20 different exotic bird species from around the world. Be advised though, this is climate controlled, ie, they keep it super humid in here. Make sure to stay hydrated here, especially in summer!

I highly recommend checking out the Key West Vacation pass. Its a booklet that can help you potentially save hundreds of dollars on your Key West vacay, and it contains savings for the Key West Butterfly Conservatory and most of the other activities I’ll be sharing, plus more! Get yours here.

Ernest Hemingway Home

After our visit, we took a short drive to visit the home of Ernest Hemingway in the Key West historic district. Hemingway and his wife lived in this beautiful French Colonial style home during the 1930’s. It was in this home that Hemingway wrote some of his most acclaimed works, including the non-fiction work Green Hills of Africa (1935), the 1936 short stories “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”, and the novels To Have And Have Not (1937) and Islands in the Stream (1970).

I loved walking around the home and learning about its history, but my favorite part had to be the cats! There are approximately 60 polydactyl (six-toed) cats who live here and are the descendants of Hemingway’s cat, Snow White. The custodians of the home have continued the tradition of naming the cats after famous people. I made friends with this cutie, Etta James.

The Hemingway House is open daily 365 days a year from 9am-5pm for walk-in visits and admission is payable in cash only. This is definitely one of the must-stop places in Key West!

Key West Itinerary

Next, we headed out toward the water. If you’re looking for a fun photo opp, make sure to check out the Southernmost Point, located on the south side of Key West. This is the southernmost point of the continental US…there are only 90 miles to Cuba from this point. Be warned though, there’s always a long line of tourists waiting for their turn to snag a photo next to this landmark.

Sunset Cruise with Fury Watersports

Of course, no Key West itinerary is complete without some water activities. One of my favorite things we did on this Key West itinerary was the Sunset Party Cruise by Catamaran. This is basically a “booze cruise,” but it was a great time! Definitely hang out on the open air deck for the best views and vibes.

Key west sunset cruise

We had such a blast enjoying the live band and we definitely danced the evening away as we cruised along into the sunset. This cruise includes an open bar and snacks. The open bar essentially consisted of wine, beer, and pre-batched margaritas. The bubbly was definitely flowing and my glass was never empty; the whole staff made sure we had a blast! Make sure to bring cash to tip, as these folks do make their living similarly to restaurant workers.

Another great sunset option if you’d rather stay on dry land is the world-famous Key West Sunset Celebration in Mallory Square. This is a nightly arts festival that happens at Mallory Square Dock in Key West, Florida. Each night around two hours before sunset both locals and tourists alike flock to the docks to experience a multicultural happening and to watch the sun sink into the Gulf of Mexico. This is definitely a great, free way to enjoy Key West at sunset!

Dinner at Half Shell Raw Bar

After all that dancing and bubbly, we needed some dinner! Half Shell Raw Bar is an iconic restaurant that any seafood lover must visit while visiting Key West. This spot is casual and the staff is super friendly, plus you can’t beat the oceanfront views as you feast on their daily fresh catches.

This spot has been a local’s favorite for years, and its clear to see why! We had some incredible oysters, lobster, crab, and shrimp that night and this seafood lover was in heaven.

Day 2: Key West Itinerary

Breakfast + Cuban Coffee at Ana’s Cafe

You know I couldn’t create a Key West itinerary is complete without partaking in some Cuban coffee. One thing I loved about our location at Southernmost Resort was the fact that Ana’s Cafe was right across the street. When you’re traveling with your girls, you can have some late nights, which means a strong cup of coffee is in order! I will admit, I’d never tried Cuban coffee before this trip. My need to try it dates back to 2013 when I saw this one episode of Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami….if you know, then you know 😉

ana's cuban cafe

Ana’s Cafe was my spot every morning of this trip and I thoroughly enjoyed their Cuban coffee and breakfast. If you love coffee, its definitely worth trying out at least one of these Cuban coffee stands. The coffee ordering experience is totally different, but this article helped me understand the different coffees and how to order.

There’s also the iconic Cuban Coffee Queen, which is another famous coffee stand in Key West.

Cuban Coffee Queen

Morning Yoga with Salute to the Sol Yoga at Truman Waterfront Park

Salute to the Sol Yoga Class Truman waterfront park

After the craziness of the previous night’s festivities, the Babes definitely needed to find our center again. Salute to the Sol Yoga was just what we needed to start day two off on the right foot.

If you’re headed to the Keys, you can book a customized waterfront yoga session with one of their certified instructors. You can also join them every Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 8:45am at The Perry Hotel & Marina Key West for an all-levels vinyasa class on their event lawn!

Lunch at Blue Heaven

One of the highest rated spots for breakfast, lunch, or dinner on the island is Blue Heaven. This restaurant is known for their American/Caribbean cuisine. This place has tons of charm and character as well and really has a true island vibe. Breakfast + lunch is served on a first come, first served basis and dinner has limited reservations available. Come for the amazing food, stay for the fun live music!

Fun on the Water

There are so many great options for water excursions when you’re in Key West. Between snorkeling, kayaking, wind surfing, parasailing, jet skiing and more, there is so much to choose from. On our second afternoon, we booked both a snorkeling and jet skiing excursion back to back. This amount of watersports is a lot for one day. If you want to have a more leisurely day, maybe just pick one to keep yourself from getting too worn out.

Aerie swimsuits 2022

Double Dip Snorkeling Tour with Fury Water Adventures

For our first water adventure, we headed back to the Fury docks to get on board one of their high-powered catamarans for the Double Dip snorkel tour. This excursion lasts 3 hours and includes snorkeling gear, sunscreen, and beverages. After you are done snorkeling, they give you the option to enjoy some beer and wine as well.

Fury Water Adventures Double Dip Snorkel

On this excursion you stop and snorkel at two different spots along the only living coral reef in North America. The Fury staff is also so knowledgeable and instructs you on best practices to enjoy your time snorkeling while doing no harm to the reef.

I will say, if you are prone to sea-sickness, bring some sea bands with you on this trip. Usually, I don’t have issues, but I felt a tad nauseous when the boat wasn’t moving as the water was a little choppy that day.

I also highly recommend this underwater smartphone case if you’re like me and want to document your underwater adventure! If you’re skeptical about it being fully waterproof, so was I, but not one drop of water got inside while I snorkeled. Plus, it has a handy wrist-strap to make sure you can’t accidentally lose your phone.

Jet Skiing with Barefoot Billy’s

Probably my favorite activity in this Key West itinerary was jet skiing with Barefoot Billy’s. I had never jet skiied before, so I was a little nervous! Their instructors walk you through everything you need to know to have a fun and safe time out on the water.

Jet Ski Tour Barefoot Billy's

However, if you’re under the age of 35, be prepared to take a test. Per Florida law, you are required to take a short test to obtain a temporary boating license in order to jet ski. The test is open book and multiple choice, but it did take us about 30-40 minutes to complete. No surprise, we all passed with flying colors because the Babes that Wander are not only beauty but also brains!

Jet Ski Tour Key West Florida

On this 90 minute tour, you will circle the island as your guide takes you to all the best stops along the way. Ask for David, he was awesome and made the entire experience so fun…he even spent about 20 minutes directing us so we could get this fun group shot. Of course, as with all these activities, make sure to tip your guides! In this case David had venmo, which made it super easy to take care of him since he took care of us.

Key West travel guide

By the end of the tour, I felt like a jet-ski pro, much like I did after we tried snowmobiling in Bend last January. What can I say…I’ve got a need for speed!

Dry Tortugas National Park

If you’re looking for an afternoon activity that doesn’t involve being on the water, check out Dry Tortugas National Park. This national park lies 70 miles from Key West, making it one of the most remote US national parks, so this may be suited to more of a day trip. The national park service details all their recommended forms of transportation to Garden Key on their site.

I wish we would’ve had time to trek out and check out Fort Jefferson. This fort is the largest all-masonry fort in the United States and was built in 1846 to protect the US’ gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. You can also camp in this national park, but be advised, you must bring ALL supplies you will need with you, as there is nowhere to purchase water, food, beverages, or any other supplies on the island.

Key West Shipwreck Museum

Another great afternoon outing option is the Key West Shipwreck Museum. This museum takes you back in time to explore the maritime history of Key West and how Key West became the richest city in the United States. The reefs around Key West made sailing treacherous, so the museum utilizes actors, films, and artifacts from the 1985 rediscovery of the wrecked vessel Isaac Allerton, which sank in 1856 to explore this piece of Key West history.

Dinner at the Docks Stock Island

The Docks on Stock Island Restaurant

For dinner that night we went to a new restaurant, the Docks Stock Island. Every local person we told that we had reservations here gushed either about how good it was or that they had heard it was amazing, so I knew we were in for a treat. This restaurant serves up freshly caught seafood in a modern and sleek space, right in the marina. Currently, they only take walk-ins and they are open 7 days a week from 12pm to 9:30pm.

The Docks on Stock Island Restaurant

We ordered up a bunch of their share plates to start, including the Tuna Carpaccio Pizza, Figs in a Blanket, and, of course, oysters. I ordered the Cauliflower Seafood Bake which was so delicious and heary, which is exactly what I needed after such an action-packed day. Their cocktail menu was also bomb, make sure to check out the Key Lime Catel, it was so good!

Drinks + Drag Show at 801 Bourbon Bar

You can’t come to Key West and not enjoy the nightlife, especially the gay bars. After a delish dinner and a quick outfit change into something more fabulous, we walked from our hotel down toward the stretch of Duval Street between Angela and Petronia Streets. We knew we were headed in the right direction when a man on bike exclaimed, “Yas queens, werk!” as he passed.

Yes, that happened. I mean, we are pretty fabulous!

Key West is definitely known for being very LGBTQ+ friendly and thus has fabulous drag shows. We decided to try out the show at 801 Bourbon Bar on Duval St. and it is not to be missed. They host two shows nightly, at 9 and 11pm. You can make reservations online here, and I highly suggest springing for the VIP section so you can be front row and center. The queens who performed that night were incredible and we had such a blast. Make sure to come with plenty of bills to throw!

801 Bourbon Bar Key West Gay Bar Drag Show

That is my complete 2 day Key West Itinerary! I hope this gave you some great ideas of what to do on your trip. If you’ve ever been to Key West, make sure to comment below your favorite spots and activities so that I can try them next time, because I’ll definitely be back someday.

Special thanks to the Florida Keys Tourism Board for giving myself and the Babes that Wander such an epic opportunity to see the best that the Keys has to offer! Definitely check out their site for even more info for planning your trip to Key West or anywhere else in the Keys.

Key West, Florida FAQ’s

What is the best month to visit Key West?

Surprisingly, the best months to visit Key West (or the Keys in general) is March-May. There will be less tourists than the heavier winter months, but the weather is still really moderate, between 70-80 degrees. The summer months are rainy and humid, but have more reasonable hotel rates for this reason. June-November is hurricane season, so I would personally avoid the area for those months.

What is Key West most known for?

Key West is the southernmost point in the continental United States and is known for Jimmy Buffet vibes, adventurous watersports, beaches, vibrant nightlife, incredible seafood, and of course, Key Lime pie.

Is the drive from Miami to Key West worth it, or should I fly?

The drive between Miami and Key West takes a little over 3 hours and is a very beautiful, scenic drive with many great stops along the way. I think it is a great roadtrip, but if you’d prefer to get to your destination quicker and with more ease, the Key West airport is very convenient.

Do you need a car when visiting Key West?

It is definitely not necessary to have a car when visiting Key West. As it is a small island, many attractions and restaurants are very walkable. We only used our car a handful of times on our visit and we could’ve gotten away with walking or calling a taxi or Uber for distances that we didn’t feel like walking.

How many days do you need in Key West?

I would suggest at least 3-4. Unfortunately, we only had 2 day and I really wish we could’ve had one more! Obviously this Key West itinerary was pretty action packed for 2 days, so definitely plan for more if you want to do all this but stretch it out over more time and have more time to relax.

Hello world! How are you all doing out there now that things are getting back to “normal”?! Here in Los Angeles, things are really starting to feel like spring and I am so ready for the change in the season! If you live in Southern California and are interested in seeing the poppies this year, I’ve got a couple tips to help you do just that, plus I’m sharing some of my favorite affordable gingham pieces that you can rock this spring and summer at home or in the streets….but probably at home.

First up, let’s talk the Poppies. So you wanna go see them, and get some cute photos of you frolicking through them, yeah? Ok. Here’s what you need to know. First off, the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve is partially open. Before leaving for the park, make sure to check out their website to check on what is open/what restrictions are in place. What we did was basically drive out to the poppies in Antelope valley, but instead of going to the reserve, we simply found a great stretch of poppies on the side of the road, pulled our car off, and jumped out when we found an area where there were no other people because, well, #socialdistancing, but also more importantly, having a wide open empty shot for the ‘gram!

The park service has a live feed, so you can check out the poppy fields and how they look before heading out here.

Honestly, that’s all there is to it. I really made this blog post kinda overhyped, didn’t I? Don’t worry, we will talk gingham in a second. Before we get to that, I want to stress to you if you want to visit the poppies, do NOT STEP ON THE POPPIES….OKAY?! If you step on them and trample them, you run the risk of hurting them and causing them to be unable to bloom next year. Don’t be that asshole. There are plenty of empty patches where you can walk around them. I know these pictures definitely make i look like I am on top of the flowers, but I took great care to stay on the patches of ground that are empty.

If you want to be super extra, bring a mirror from home and try that mirror selfie outside trend!

Now, let’s talk fashion, because this is a fashion blog after all! For this shoot, I kinda wanted to create a modern day Dorothy look from Wizard of Oz. Whyyyyy you ask? Anytime I hear the poppies, I think of the scene where Dorothy and the gang are ALMOST at to Oz, but they fall asleep in the poppy field, so that’s what I kind of wanted to recreate… how did I do?

The truth is, gingham is a classic print that has made a huge resurgence in the last couple seasons, and it definitely doesn’t look like it is clicking its heels and leaving anytime soon! I’ve rounded up some of my favorite gingham pieces that are affordable and chic so you can snag this look as well! The image below is shopable, so if you see anything you like, simply click it, and you will be directed to the product page! If you are looking for my shoes or my bag, they are current! Shop a similar pair of my shoes here and my bag here!

Thanks for checking out this post! Make sure you check out my last post before you go!
