Last week, my boyfriend Nate and I decided we should get out of town. Not in the “crap, the authorities are after me” kind of way…more of the “hey, we should get the hell out of the rat race that is Los Angeles” kind of way. As much as I love LA, it is still always good to get away. I suggested Solvang, CA because of its apparent adorableness, but mostly for its proximity to wine country. And by proximity, I mean it is smack in the middle of the Santa Ynez Valley. If you don’t know me that well, then you probably don’t know how much I love wine but…I really love wine. Luckily, Nate loves wine too, so we both agreed Solvang was the place to go, mostly for the wine, but also because neither of us had ever been there before.
Just as a short bit of history, Solvang is Danish for “Sunny Field,” which is pretty appropriate, considering that they get a lot of sun, (hey, its Southern California after all) and there are a lot of fields…of wine grapes. It was founded in 1911 but a group of Danish settlers who basically said “I can’t even” to the harsh winters in the Midwest. I don’t blame them…if you live in the Midwest or have ever been there in the winter, it is pretty brutal. Today, Solvang still retains its Danish heritage and is home to some great bakeries and restaurants in the Danish tradition. We loved exploring this small town, because it is just so freaking adorable. It honestly feels kind of like you are at Epcot at Disney, but not as contrived.
I mean, when have you ever seen a horse-drawn trolley before?
First of all, let’s get down to the important stuff, which of course is my outfit. As you can see, I am wearing overalls. I have been a little skeptical of overalls for a while, because every time I’ve tried them on, I haven’t been sure if it was appropriate to wear overalls anymore. The last time I wore them was probably the 4th grade, so it felt a little strange. Then, I found these overalls. They’re comfortable, and they have a different twist than your run-of-the-mill overalls. I love that the legs are longer and are sort of like culottes, which is very on trend as of late. I love wearing a crop top under overalls to get an unexpected peek of skin. There’s nothing like a flash of rib cage to help you feel like you’re not an 11-year-old in overalls.
I also want to talk for one second (or two) about The Landsby, the amazing hotel we stayed in. Seriously, I don’t get paid to talk about this kind of stuff (yet) so you can read this and know that I am truly obsessed with this hotel. As I understand it, it was recently renovated and re-opened earlier this year. The interior design of this hotel is literally the stuff of my home decor dreams. If Anthropologie and Ikea had a baby, the interior of this hotel would be their baby. Here’s a couple of photos of The Landsby…consider me inspired to redecorate!
This was my room key. Are you kidding me?! I wanted to take that Tolkien key chain off soooo badly!
